so many people who admire armstrong with cancer are conflicted. >> reporter: one of those people is bob hammer, the man in danville, who fought the same thing that armstrong did, testicular cancer. and he credits armstrong and his foundation, for helping him through tough times. but it's been a bit of a struggle to reconciling between armstrong the hero, and armstrong, the athlete who may have reportedly admitting to doping today. >> i wanted you to know how much i appreciate your support. >> reporter: it's the first thing you see when you walk into bob's house, the yellow jersey signed by the man himself, lance armstrong. >> it's a constant reminder of how it all began. >> reporter: in 2001, he fought testicular cancer for the second time. overwhelmed by 26 rounds of chemotherapy. >> it was the tumor the size of a big cantaloupe.

and a cucumber up his neck. >> it made him fight for his life. and he won. >> reporter: the couple met armstrong several times, after raising hundreds of thousands of dollars for his organization. but with his admission of doping today, they're conflicted. >> they treated people, maybe not the right way over time. but you can't take away what he's done with his name and helped the millions of people who have been diagnosed with cancer. >> shame on lance. but in the same breath, congratulations to him for, you know, his fight with cancer. and it's thanks to that we are where we are now. >> reporter: and it's something else that turned him into an everyday symbol of appreciation. when hammer met him in 2001, he was 48 hours away from having surgery that would prevent him from having anymore kids. months later, hammer was doing

well and his wife was pregnant with josh, who is now 9 years old. >> there's moments in our life, where you're reminded of what you have. and how it got there. and that will never go away. >> reporter: and the hammers say they're foundation, have a ball, has $1.3 million since 2005. as for armstrong, some say his admission is to get him back in the cycling world, similar to levi leipheimer, who admitted to doping. his six-month ban ends this march. it's a complex web he weaved here. there will likely be a legal fallout for armstrong's confession. there might be a whistle-blowing lawsuit. he received millions of dollars in taxpayer money when the

postal service sponsored him. armstrong's interview with oprah winfrey is set to air on thursday. for details go to nbc bay area.com and search armstrong. the bitter chill is sticking with us tonight. want to take you outside. in some places, temperatures are dropping into the 30s. team average of this cold snap. chief meteorologist, jeff raineri, is tracking the frigid conditions. let's start with jean elle, in livermore, which is one of the coldest places in the bay area, at 11:00 tonight, jean. >> reporter: you don't have to convince me of that. my phone tells me it's 31 degrees here in downtown livermore. it can feel cold inside, even when you have the heat on. but some people in the bay area tonight can't turn the heat on because the power is out. crews work to clear the redwood

trees that fell. neighbors say it was loud. >> i could hear the trees starting to fall. >> reporter: no one was hurt. an arborist says root rot caused the tree to give way. it knocked power lines down, knocking pour out to 69 homes. 30 of those homes are expected to stay dark until tuesday morning. they are cozying up by the fire and cooking on a gas stove by candlelight. it will be a long, cold night for 12-year-old maddie. >> i'm very devastated that i don't have internet for eight hours. >> reporter: eight hours and counting. the lack of power and cold temperatures was too much for several people affected by the outage. >> it's freezing cold. >> reporter: this family took their 4-month-old daughter to a warm grandparents house. >> we're going to my parents' house where they have heat and

electricity. >> reporter: others are weighing their options. >> for a very short period of time, it's tolerable. but i can't spend the night there. you know? it's pretty darn cold. >> reporter: the cold is expected to continue. another morning of icy windshields in palo alto is expected. the chp is warning drivers about black ice. slick road ice is being blamed for accidents in the east bay hills monday morning. the chp says slow down, if it appears the road is icy. and during this cold snap you want to take care of your pets, your pipes and your plants. let's bring in jeff raineri. another frigid night on tap. what's next? >> temperatures are going to drop in 6 to 12 hours. we could have temperatures that feel like the upper teens. 39 in pleasanton. 40 in danville. and 40 in walnut creek. and for the north bay, that's where temperatures are currently the coldest at this hour.

right now, we are dealing with 32 in petaluma. 38 in sonoma. and 36 in novato. we'll have ice developing on the roadways for tomorrow morning. three of the top coldest for the hours between 4:00 and 8:00 in the morning will be gilroy, 25. napa, 26. and livermore at 27. and as we saw, power out due to some trees that have come down. that's an impact of this cold weather. the long hours can weaken the root systems. you add on top of it, the wet november and december, when we had all of the rain and wind. and we may see more trees coming down. the most vulnerable spot would be the north bay. there's your freeze warning. hasn't changed over the past three days. critical spots will be the north, east and south bay. back with your forecast. and a bit of warming coming your way. you will be enjoying that. san jose will soon have a police chief at least temporary one. the city needs a few more months to find a replacement for chris

moore. until then, san jose deputy chief larry esquivel is the acting chief. esquivel started in 1984. for the past year, he was the bureau of field operations. moore leaves his post this friday. this will be a pivotal 24 hours in oakland. the city council will decide whether to hire a high-profile police consultant at tomorrow's meeting. laws have been resisted by oakland voters. that's what nypd william bratton is known for. and the city has proposed hiring him for $150,000 consultant contract. bratton is known for new york's stop and frisk policy, which was declared a violation of civil rights by a federal judge last week. critics of bratton expect to

show up. a shooting happened right in the afternoon. the city's gunshot detection system alerted police to that crime. officers responded and found 24-year-old jonathan behind an oakland street. he had been shot multiple times. a second victim showed up with gunshot wounds, as well. he's listed in critical condition. a warning for women after a violent attack in a popular san francisco neighborhood. here's a sketch of a suspect that was released today. police say he tried to rape a 31-year-old woman in the mission district earlier this month. the victim says the man threw her to the pavement. and while straddling her, slammed her head to the concrete. police say she was able to scream for help and the suspect ran off. anyone with information is urged to contact police. new at 11:00, landmark legislation. new york is poised to be the first state in the nation to pass stricter gun control lows in the wake of the tragedy in

newtown. andrew cuomo got the laws from executive leaders. we're hearing from president obama to get tougher gun lows on the books. he's reviewing a series of proposals made by vice president biden. >> if there is a step we can take that would save even one child from what happened in newtown, we should take that step. >> san francisco is pushing a bill that would close the loophole in california's assault weapons ban. that loophole allows the sale of magazines that can be replaced by pushing a button. facebook is searching for the next big thing. what's missing from the social network giant could explain what it is going to unveil tomorrow. and 49ers coach jim harbaugh steps up to the mic. but there's only one thing he wanted to talk about. the promising news for weekend warriors and runners to

there's a lot of speculation as to what facebook will announce tomorrow morning. tonight, we talk to facebook users to see what they want to see added or changed to the site. downtown palo alto is attracting customers with freshly-baked bread, dessert and coffee. but the store is trying to expand its customer base using facebook. >> a lot of people are on it. if we have a presence on facebook, people can see us. >> reporter: he is curious what mark zuckerberg will roll out on tuesday. scott budman believes it could be something that would take on google. >> facebook wants to get a bigger chunk of the search pie. and maybe coming up with a new product that's more efficient, advertisers can target you more efficiently. >> reporter: if it is a search engine, it can help businesses. they would love to see a search engine/social media experience. >> people put their experiences maybe as a comment. if people read it, they're more likely to come back.

complete coverage tomorrow morning for you. don't worry. coverage begins at 4:30 in the morning. apple stock has been gradually falling for months. especially today, after new signs the iphone 5 isn't selling as well as expected. an early-morning report in "the wall street journal" said apple has cut orders for iphone parts because of slower sales. investors started selling. apple stock took a dip below $500 a share for the first time since last february. apple was above $700 per share just last september. companies who make parts for the iphone 5, also lost ground. lawsuits brought by the victims of the san bruno pipeline explosion against pg&e may not be going to trial. lawyers say they've come up with a plan to settle remaining lawsuits in the next three months. more than 320 san bruno residents still have active suits against pg&e, for the explosion that killed eight and

destroyed an entire neighborhood. 120 other people have already received their settlements. this could be a game-changer for active people with bad knees. a new jell that could put the bounce back in your step. it's called hydrojell. it's a jell-o substance. it may mend cartilage. little could be done to repair cartilage. researchers tested the jell on a small group of patients. it becomes promise for becoming the standard for a low-cost procedure. >> the major benefit is you have a repair that is more like the native cartilage. it will last longer. it will perform better. the patient will be able to tolerate more weight-bearing activities without having pain. >> this could help a lot of people. studies are needed to determine if it's safe long-term. if you can't shake your cough after getting sick, don't

worry. it is normal. a new study shows while most people think a cough should last no more than a week or so, the average cough actually lasts 18 days. the study was to highlight the gulf between public perception and reality. too many people ask for stronger antibiotics for their cough much earlier than they need, which contributes to antibiotics working less for everyone in the long run. in cases, antihistamines and cough drops will do the trick. did i hear you correctly when you said certain cities will hit the mid-20s? >> you'll be shocked who we will be colder than tomorrow morning. okay. this is cold no matter what your standards are. 34 in santa rosa. 33 in livermore. and 39 in san jose. a cold spot in gilroy. close to the 20s across parts of the bay area.

if you've been on vacation. let's say you're coming back tonight and getting ready tomorrow. most critical spots will see patchy forecast are the areas in purple. for the north bay, all of the interior valleys. also, back for all of the trivalley and for the south bay. that's where we'll have widespread 20s and 30s. if you haven't covered up the plants, they likely suffered some damage. and please remember the pets. they need to come inside, as well. tomorrow morning, some things you want to think about before you get in the car. and start that engine. usually need about three-times the normal amount of distance to stop if you hit a patch of ice. make sure you keep plenty of distance between you and the car in front of you. if you hit ice, brake gently to avoid skidding. and be careful over our bridges and overpasses. those tend to freeze first. we're not expecting widespread icing. but it's something to think about. you can see it's clear in san jose for tonight. and into san francisco, we're noting visibility at ten miles

and/or better. temperatures are likely even drop down to the 30s, up against our immediate coastline. high pressure is out here. we do have eventual warming coming in that seven-day forecast. it's trapped way out in the pacific. we have to wait at least three more days until temperatures finally start to warm up. across the bay area, we're locked in the same pattern we had thursday and friday, with the colder air sitting across california. we're not going to get this to change until high pressure moves this out of the way, which may not happen until thursday and friday of this upcoming week. as far as tonight goes and into tomorrow morning, we'll get the coldest spots in santa rosa with 27. livermore 28. san jose 33. 31 in los gatos. and 25 in gilroy. that will be one of our coldest. we talk about spots that we're going to be colder than. this is unreal. dallas, texas, a low of 28. we're at 25 in gilroy. new york city will have 37. we have them smashed by a long shot here.

38 in philadelphia. and washington, d.c. at 41. gilroy, california, bay area standards are not. it's going to be cold for tomorrow morning. by the afternoon, we'll get the sun out. temperatures in the mid-50s. going to be a beautiful afternoon in the south bay. a 30-degree jump for a lot of the trivalley. 52 in gilroy. and 50 back for dan vill. san francisco, 53. and santa rosa, 56. on your three-day forecast, it stays dry and hazy for tuesday and wednesday. as we head through the upcoming weekend, there's your warm-up. you can almost feel it there, with 66 degrees. spf of 30. maybe you have the short sleeves on. get you a while there. and maybe you have shorts on. it will feel warm by saturday. you know, so into the numbers when i look at it. when you said, it's going to be warm saturday. 66 is warm. it's still cool. it will be warm. >> compared to 32. >> yes, the voice of reason over here. >> yes.

after three decades, actress natalie wood's death, a coroner's review is raising questions about her drowning. her death was originally ruled an accidental drowning. and bruises on her arms were determined to be from the actress trying to climb into a dinghy. today, nbc obtained an updated report from the coroner's office. in it, the charge of death was changed from accidental drowning to drowning and other undetermined factors. and the current medical examiner says the bruises likely occurred before she went into the water. the l.a. county sheriff's department is continuing their investigation. july is going to be a big month for the royal family. that's when kate's due to give birth to prince william's first

child. they say the duchess of cambridge is feeling better after a bout of severe morning sickness. the palace went on to mix the twin rumors saying there's only one baby, which will be third in line to the british throne after prince charles and prince william. up next, jim harbaugh, the ice painters for the sharks.
